Theres a lot wrong with this set up. To start off with, I think the map is focussed too far South. I sort of speed read things, though it looked interesting and did the map. When I came to deploy troops it appears that the action starts North of Bong Son.
Next up, I sort of placed all the North Vietnam units in the West when I think they probably held most of the map, in particular the Clay Giap Mountains which were assaulted towards the end. however, I can redeploy the units, but havnt done so yet.
Also, the US deployed air mobile units from the 22nd Cavalry. Currnetly I have no rules for air mobile units and so they dont really behave as you would hope. However, if you could place them where you wanted then you probably would follow history. However, I think the main drawback is that the units from the 1st Cavalry used around 28 January were probably taken out and then used for a seperate insertion around 6 February. However, my rules dont cater for removing the units and redeploying them. However, I think I have considered that for future development and so might have to come back to this. To get round that I have put them in waves, so the first lot will be stuck on the ground. However, another problem comes from the fact that when the new elements of the 1st Cavalry arrive in February the hex they arrive in might not be ideal or even free.
However, Its all a start. Maybe after some play testing I can balance things about a bit.
I have added some USAF F100D strike aircraft. There are two of them with 15 sorties each. See how that effects things. The Wikipedia article states that the USAF dropped napalm on at the Battle of Bong Son.
Im pretty sure that the beligerant list can be improoved significantly. To start off with, the Wikipedia article mentions marines being present during phase 2 but I havnt included any marines, yet as I dont know where they came from. Im sort of guessing that airmobile units are not marines, but im not certain and I dont want to just add marines for the hell of it.
Further, im sure there must have been other smaller units involved, for example, artillery, armour and motorised units etc. Currently its all a bit basic, but as said, a start to get you thinking about that phase in the Vietnam war.
